Influence Operations Mount Ahead of US 2024 Elections

In November, the world will be watching the US 2024 presidential elections as the results will shape US policy domestically and abroad for the next four years. Similar to recent attempts by Russia and Iran to shape public opinion and voter behavior during the 2024 French elections, threat actors are preparing digital assets and conducting initial shaping activities that will almost certainly be followed by more robust influence operations as November approaches.

Join us for an Intelligence Briefing with a panel of Insikt Group expert analysts and delve into the complex threat landscape of the US 2024 elections:

  • Russia: The Doppelgänger and CopyCop influence operations networks continue to impersonate concerned US citizens as well as US-based media, and are creating several original, inauthentic news portals targeting audiences in the US.
  • China: The Empire Dragon network (also tracked as Spamouflage Dragon) continues engaging in coordinated inauthentic behavior (CIB), amplifying content highlighting polarizing domestic issues.
  • Iran: Tehran continues to use a cyclical approach to spread anti-US propaganda related to the upcoming election across various digital assets, including newly developed covert social media accounts, some of which are very likely affiliated with influence networks that attempted influence operations against the US 2020 elections.
  • Domestic violent extremists (DVEs): DVEs of multiple ideological persuasions continue to physically threaten election personnel, officials, and infrastructure in advance of the elections, targeting candidates for office, judicial officials involved in election-related cases, and state elections officials.
